About Ray:

Shahr-e-Ray as a city in Tehran province with an area of 27 square kilometers, has a population about one million. The city is limited to Azadegan free way (northern border), to Kahrizak (southern border), to Sizdah-e Aban parish (eastern border), to Dowlat Abad parish (western border) and consists of three divisions (Central, Fashavieh, Kahrizak) and six dehistan [villages],(Hassan Abad, Vahn Abad, Qal’eh Now, Kahrizak, Fashavieh, Ghani Abad) and three towns (Hassan Abad, Kahrizak, Baqer Shahr).
Although, Shahr-e-Ray has its own governor, it is considered as the district 20 of Tehran Municipality and the residential areas have been linked together gradually.
The main fame of the city is mostly because of the existence of the holy shrine of Hazrat-e-AbdulAzim (Peace be upon him) and it was previously called “Shah Abdul Azim”. This city is one of the most ancient cities of Iran can be called as the mother of Tehran, but after selection of Tehran as the capital, Ray (shahr-e-Ray) lost its importance and greatness especially during the end years of Pahlavi dynasty and was forgotten as well as other southern parts of Tehran which were deprived of any considerations.
After the victory of the Islamic Revolution there were a lot of changes in civil and architectural tissue of the city and the face of the city was completely changed with many cultural, entertaining and social centers.
Different points of the city were linked with modern high ways, bridges (subway & overpass ). As a result of these changes the district municipality was chosen as the first position in beautification.
Close access to the holy shrine of Imam Khomeini , Imam International Airport and Tehran Refinery Plant have doubled Ray’s geographical, economical and social significance. Shahr-e-Ray has also a cement factory in its north east side.
Every year a lot of tourists from different countries travel to visit Shahr-e-Ray for pilgrimage and archaeological purposes.
